IR 322 International and European Protection of Human Rights
This course is an introduction to the international and European system of human rights protection. The first half of this class is spared for comprehension of the global human rights protection regime. It provides a comprehensive overview of the relevant international instruments and institutions emphasizing legal, political and practical issues. It covers the major human rights treaties and shows how these treaties have been interpreted and applied by human rights bodies in practice. The second half of the class is specializing in the European system of protection of human rights under the OSCE, Council of Europe, European Convention of Human Rights, the mechanism of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), and the case law from the ECtHR.
IR4022 Protection of Human Rights in the European Union and Turkey
This course provides a detailed comparative account of human rights protection systems in Turkey and the European Union in the light of the Turkey’s progress reports prepared by the European Commission and the effects of the European Convention on Human Rights on Turkish laws, policy making and institutions. By going through specific rights themes, the students will gain a comprehensive understanding of policy transfer in terms of human rights.
The students that complete both of these modules successfully are awarded with a certificate.
