The first unit of the EUHR Module starts this week. The IR322 coded course “International and European Protection of Human Rights.”

This course is composed of 13 modules, a mid-term and a final exam. IR322 is an introduction to the international and European system of human rights protection. The first half of this class is spared for comprehension of the global human rights protection regime. It provides a comprehensive overview of the relevant international instruments and institutions emphasizing both legal and practical issues. It covers the major human rights treaties and shows how these treaties have been interpreted and applied by human rights bodies in practice. The second half of the class is specializing in the European system of protection of human rights under the OSCE, Council of Europe, European Convention of Human Rights, the mechanism of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), and the case law from the ECtHR.

Due to the vastness of the matter, this course does not provide detailed analysis of all aspects of the international and European protection of human rights. It is rather expected that participants will assimilate essential conceptual knowledge that will enable them to improve their understanding of contemporary international relations. It is also expected that students will become familiar with the main legal and institutional sources of international human rights law. They will thus be able to continue developing their own skills in the future, by the second offering of the EUHR Module; and also in accordance with their personal interests and as required by their academic and professional career.
